Annual Photography Challenge 2012

Success breeds success and our third photography competition has been launched. Following the pattern of previous years, there are two sections, Open and Family. The first is intended for the enthusiast photographer who may enter many competitions and the latter those who take photos occasionally as momentos of happy occasions. In our last competition however, a family photograph was the overall winner.
Award winning photographes from the last competition have been retained on this web site for the pleasure they bring and can be seen by clicking on here.
Honda North Shore sponsors the event and has presented a very fine, large cup for the winner to hold on his/her mantlepiece for a year.
Entries close on 31st May. For full details and an entry form, click on the photograph opposite.
Exchange Student Host Families
The Club will be hosting another overseas student in 2012-13. Stephen is managing the process again - a huge undertaking - and is looking for four families (not necessarily Rotary members) to take in the student for three months each. In the past, this has been a richly rewarding event for the host families, parents and children alike.
Stephen can be contacted on 021 470 612, 419 0886 or fitforfun@xtra.co.nz.
Rugby Raffle
Raffle tickets are now available from Mark - thanks to all those who have volunteered to take 6 books or more.
The Night Market - Takapuna Beach Christmas Carnival
The Night Market was initiated as a long term foundation for our fund raising efforts. The scheme was so ambitious as to cause concern over our ability to deliver and over the level of investments which will have a long term effect upon our finances. The risk has been shared with Takapuna North Rotary Club and to date, the ride has been surprisingly smooth. The returns are arriving earlier, attendance is steady, Club members supporting the venture remain committed and the visionaries are now seen to have the balanced judgement of the Elders. The Bank of New Zealand, our sponsor, has made a great contribution to the success and we would like to publicly acknowledge this.
For the local community, the Night Market has become an important event. It provides a shopping and eating experience different from that of the malls and much better value. Many attendees spend time wandering around just enjoying the environment. The proximity to the sea means that a good shopping experience can be supplemented by a good walk along the beach.
On 1st December, the Takapuna Beach Christmas Carnival took place run in conjunction with the Takapuna Beach Business Association and the Takapuna Beach BNZ Night Market. Sponsors included Classic Hits, The Lion Foundation and Benefitz.
To turn the concept into reality required both imagination and a huge effort. Almost every Club member took part on the day, many in roles which took them right outside their area of comfort ("who wants to be Spongebob Squarepants?"). Santa dropped by and said hello to everyone. It was a family affair with bouncy castles, superb entertainers and story tale characters to make childhood a wonderful experience on the day. Supported by many local organisations such as the Salvation Army and North Harbour dance groups, not to mention warm sunshine, the result was one of the high points of the Club.
Below are some our well concealed Club members, Hutch, Peter, Linda, Ray and Wallace and some of our outside helpers. Fort those who would like to see more photographs of the event, please click here.
